A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the Susan Knapp Amphitheater's debut on August 10 during the opening ceremonies of the 2006 Iowa State Fair.
The Amphitheater hosted top-name country acts such as Billy Currington, Shannon Brown, Shooter Jennings and Country Gold stars. Veteran Fair favorite Vocal Trash also played the stage, and the Fair ended with a bang on the last day with the Raven Simone performance.
The stage was made possible by a $750,000 contribution from William C. Knapp. The new stage, located in Heritage Village on the Fairgrounds, is named in honor of Mr. Knapp's wife, Susan Knapp.
"The Iowa State Fair is one of my favorite causes," said Bill Knapp. "It showcases the talents and abilities of Iowa's people and the quality of our products. It is my intention that this contribution will benefit all Iowans and encourage others to recognize the heritage and significance of our State Fair."
Construction began on the 36'x70' state-of-art venue in 2005. It is the largest free-entertainment stage on the Fairgrounds and accommodates more than 5,000 Fairgoers, including seating for 3,000. The facility also features dressing rooms, storage areas and trailer/bus loading docks. A new public restroom facility has been constructed east of the Amphitheater to provide for the increased crowds in the area.
Bill and Susan Knapp have been long-time supporters of the Iowa State Fair and the Blue Ribbon Foundation. In 1997, Mr. Knapp provided a $1 Million endowment for expansive renovations to the Varied Industries Building. Susan Knapp has been a life-long, avid Fairgoer, participant, and exhibitor. In addition, she authored a book "Bells Goes to the Fair" with proceeds benefiting the Blue Ribbon Foundation and renovation efforts for the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
